Chapter 1

It was a cold night at the Henson plantation. Julily and Mammy Sally just received news that a slave trader will be coming to the plantation to buy some of the slaves. Julily asked who will be bought. Mammy Sally answered that there's no way to know for sure.

Mammy Sally talked about a place where no slavery is allowed. A place called Canada.

"There's a place the slaves been whisperin' around called Canada. The law don't allow no slavery there. They say you follow the north star, and when you step onto this land, you are free..."

Mammy Sally carefully explained that that's information for your ears only. Do not discuss this with anyone else.

Chapter 2

It was time for the field hands to be sold. The slave trader had arrived and the slaves were scared of being ripped away from their mammies. Julily watched, in pain, a little girl being sent into the wagon to be brought to the next plantation.

As Julily had feared the most, she was chosen. Tears rolled down her eyes. She hoped in the wagon and looked for Mammy, hoping to say goodbye for the last time. She couldn't see here. Anywhere.

Chapter 3

Julily was hoping, at every turn in the road, that Mammy Sally would stand there and order the driver to bring the slaves back to the Henson Plantation. But after every turn was an empty road. This made Julily sadder and sadder.

Down the long dirt road was a waterfall, which the slaves have never seen. They had never seen so much water in one place. The slave trader stopped the wagon to fill the water jug. Julily spotted a tall white man and an also tall black man not to far from the side of the road. They also spotted the slaves. They walked over together and asked them why they were chained by the legs. The slaves explained, while pointing at the wagon driver and the slave trader, that they were taken away from their wives and children. That they were slaves that were recently sold. The white man immediately turned to the black man and asked him to fill and bring a pale of water for these perishing slaves. The slave trader had returned before the black man fetched water.

"Don't listen to this Quaker Abolitionist and that free nigger boy" said the slave trader.

Chapter 4

One day, still on the road to Mississippi, the wagon slushed through a muddy swamp. The boys, who were walking in chains behind the wagon, thought it would be nice to walk through water to cool of their burning, bruised and bleeding legs. Since it was very muddy, it was not so refreshing. They were forced to walk slower than usual as a cause of the mud. Lester tugged at the dragging boys. Helping them was hard enough without his own pain. The fat man didn't appreciate the lagging of Sam and Adam. He slashed them in the back with his whip.

Julily had to help them. She went for their aid, but Lester shook his head, a warning for her not to come. Julily ignored this warning. Lester was more proud than angry, proud of Julily for wanting to help.

The wagon eventually passed the swamp and drove softly on dry land, where Sam and Adam could walk with less difficulty.

Chapter 5

The slaves have arrived to the Riley Plantation in Vicksburgh, Mississippi. Julily thought it was a quite beautiful property at first, but that changed when she saw the slaves' fields they were working in. She was a little upset while noticing that their were hardly communication between slaves. They had really scrawny legs, and sucked-in cheeks.

An old lady came to bring the newcomers to their shacks, which were much less nice than the ones at the Henson Plantation. As one of the slaves was being brought by the old, wrinkly woman, one of them managed to escape her grip, then ran and grabbed Julily's skirt, while screaming "Julily!". The fat white man ordered the old grannie to shut that little baby's mouth.

Julily walked towards another cabin after being told to go with the slaves who don't have families. She didn't look for Mammy Sally, because she would hate to see her on this plantation. There were several other slaves, mostly girls.

"Hi, I'm Lisa" said a soft-voiced girl a little younger than Julily. She sat beside her.

Chapter 6

The bell rang from outside the cabin, meaning everyone had to exit the cabins. Because of the blinding lights from the sun, Julily squinted her eyes, then quickly when she saw the worst thing she had ever seen. The little slaves were eating their food like pigs in a pig trough. Not because they were greedy, because they had to. There was no plates and forks. Massa Sims couldn't care less. It was time to go to work. Liza gave Julily a long stick and a bunch of dirty rags. She asked what to do with these items. Liza explained that the long stick was a "Battlin' Stick". You use them to beat the dirt out of the rags.
